Etc

This page will keep track of the ebook uploads and contributions. The ebooks will have now basic quality requirements and we will keep track of the creation date as not to have outdated versions up. The requirements for the ebooks are:
  • Providing a date of an ebooks creation.
  • Usage of black text on white background. Versions with white text on black background can be provided as an extra, only if you provided one with white background.
  • EPUB, MOBI, KEPUB are not to be made from PDF ebooks due to wrap problems which occur during conversion. Such ebooks will be ignored and post deleted.
  • If different types of ebooks (e.g. EPUB and MOBI) are provided from one creator, they should have the same creation date.
  • MOBI are to be made with MOBI file type: both (in calibre you find it in MOBI file output tab).
  • It is recommended to create MOBI files from EPUBs with Amazon's official KindleGen, which yields best results of all applications that automate the process.
From other notes, we will take in and list uploaded ebooks from multiple creators under the same series listing, however, we might delete older versions in case there were significant edits in the series and a new ebook upload appears. The requirements only apply to krytyk's translations. Kadi's and Aorii's work on the blog can be included here, if they wish so. Bareus has volunteered to take care of this section. May his valiant efforts never be forgotten.

You have to edit metadata for autor and title. Autor of this book is Aloha Zachou, not A S U S. If you want to add some kind of credits for creating this ebook, you may consider adding a credit page in the book itself (see swhp's ebook above if you want an example)

I just locked over it and you might want/have to change something. There are some lines in prologue that goes way beyond the page width which really doesn't look good (tested with Calibre). Also you set the wrong author name in the metadata of the epub.

Just saying: Epilogue and Afterword haven't been edited by me (and applied by krytyk) yet.
You (or the one who does that) might have to re-do it again on a later date. At the earliest the next day from this point in time.

Hey Bareus... out of curiosity, have you not been bothering looking over Daybreak or just haven't been finding any mistakes?

          Reply
          1. Bareus

Don't worry, I always (immediately) read your Daybreak post when they come out :D
The last few chapters I didn't find any mistakes, though it might also be because on those days I was either stressed out with uni or was to sleepy to find any minor mistakes. Or they were so good edited, that the major/minor error's are really hard to find ;)

          2. Aorii

Aha, thanks, that does alleviate xD
Kadi has been on my case about quality control in the last few chapters (mostly concerned over tension/mood), so I've been worrying more than my usual.

          1. Bareus

Hm... I should probably post it, eh? Epilogue and Afterwords have been edited etc.
            Happy ebook creating :)

Since some people are having trouble with not knowing how to use MEGA, i'll leave you some simple instructions here.

When you send me an email (at dinko.razor@gmail.com) i send you the links to both PDF and EPUB volumes (you can pick which one you want). You click on the link(s) and it takes you to a folder where you can see all 11 volumes. If you want to download EVERYTHING in the folder, there's a button in the top right that says "Download as ZIP". If you want to download a specific volume, you merely RIGHT CLICK on the volume that you want, and then click on "Download" -> "Download as ZIP".

You do NOT have to have a MEGA account in order to do any of this. I've tired it on 3 different computers, without being logged into my MEGA account and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.

None of these are my work (I believe they're all zenkichi and one from Peter), i merely want to share with anyone who's interested.

Errr... I just copied the text for the volume, and stop if ever there is a illustration since the illustration itself doesn't get copied but the file name will, and paste it to Sigil. After that I use a code that resizes the illustration (I don't really know how it works, but hey it works), then repeat it until I finish pasting the entire volume to Sigil. The tedious part starts here. Since the background of this site is black, when you paste the text, it will also have background. You will have to go to code view and delete the code that gives the text the black background. Just try experimenting with any volumes till you get the hang of it. ( I spent half a day figuring out what codes to delete.)

Never really understood the point of an EPUB with a Black background. Most EPUB Readers, at least on mobile, have the ability to switch to some kind of dark mode, if not more. Calibre can do it too, though you have to manually add "body { background-color: black; color: white;}" to the stylesheet in the settings, but once done you can save it as a theme and switch freely.

If I missed anything, or something is broken in a certain Reader let me know(provide app name and details of issue) and I'll update the EPUB if the issue can be fixed. I've done my best to have my EPUBs be as compatible as possible, and follow current EPUB standards as much as possible, but every once in a while there's an app that has its own weird quirks.

Your epub has imo 2 problems:
      1. Same like the one from Vesper
      2. In metadata you declared Yukisan as author of the book, even though Yukisan is the illustrator of the novel. You should probably declare Yukisan as "dc:contributor", even though contributors won't be necessarily displayed on ebook readers. (Also it seems to be a bad style to declare multiple authors in one tag, see here

        1. What app/reader are you reading it with? I've tested it with several apps(Adobe DE, Nook, Moonplus, Cool Reader, etc...) and even my Nook eReader device, none of them had any issues with the images stretching. All the images properly resize according to their aspect using CSS and DIV containers. If anything, it's the Japanese style brackets and other symbols that a lot of the apps complained about. I'm not big on image embeds using SVG so I usually avoid them, and it's never given me issues.

        2. That was a holdover from Calibre that I was too lazy to notice. Thanks for pointing it out. I've fixed them and replaced the uploads.

This is just an extreme sample:

I looked it up with calibre. This is, how it looks like in normal, but when I stretch the window (or go into fullscreen like here) those images stretch.
Could you check if those images stretch when changing the orientation to horizontal (or is it called landscape?) on your eReader? I can't really test this on my kindle, since I don't know how much it changes if EPUBs are converted to MOBI.

Found the problem. by default the Calibre viewer breaks my CSS. Basically, from what I can guess they're assuming any "img" element won't have any CSS sizing for some reason, so they forcibly apply a "max-height" property(and a couple other tweaks) to all "img" elements that changes dynamically with the resizing of the window, to make sure the image completely fits on one page. Which is stupid, because if they were going to go that far they should've also taken the width into account as well.

A quick and easy fix is to click the "scroll" button in the top-right corner of the window, which switches the reader to "flow mode". Everything looks fine after that.

Satisfying every reader is a pain :P They all have their own ideas on how to do things. Even SVG breaks in some. Play Books is one of the best in support, but having to upload your books to Google's servers first is a pain. It's weirdly stupid how far the EPUB standard lags behind modern HTML and CSS. You shouldn't have to use a chunk of SVG or CSS just to get an image to display properly in a reader. In a browser making a column of text with pictures is so simple, just an "img" element, and a few lines of universal CSS.

that and author's note edits :)

Another thing: Except the cover image all illustrations stretch horribly. You should consinder using svg-elements to avoid this. You can find more information on this here

Here's an update of the epub. Applied the current Interlude and Afterword, also switch to svg-elements.

To be honest, the only reason I didnt use svg was because it doesn't play nice with my phone epub reader when it comes to long images.
Do tell me if there are any further problems, since my reader shows no problem...

I might make some OSO EPUBs. I like the series, but I can be OCD with compatibility so it can take some time for me to finish one to my satisfaction, since I go full manual with direct XHTML and CSS editing, rather than using a Document Editor(Word, etc...). Images are the toughest to get working correctly in most readers with proper aspect resizing, though I'm pretty confident I've found a pretty universal method. Just a bit time consuming reformatting each image embed. Also thankfully Krytyk isn't obsessed with fancy tables, as those are a pain to get working properly.
