Volume 5 finished, some light at the very end... not too bright though.

xxxzAll right, this marks the end of AA volume 5, it was long, it was dark. I believe it to be extremely interesting volume, probably the best so far, however the damage I took from its darkness is severe. The epilogue is here, and afterword is here. Make sure to read them both, reading afterword is basic courtesy one needs to pay to the author who brought the book to life.

Bah, even Alice took damage... yes, nekama's alice, look what happened to her. She's been brainwashed by the darkness. (rather, I spent around 15 minutes photoshopping her), but oh well. Alice has succumbed, muhahahaha. Wish I had more time to do a draw a completely new version of her, but sadly, can't do everything at once - so there's just the recolouring.

As for PDF, EPUB, KEPUB. Wait some time until I rest and re-read the entire book, editing it. It might take a few days, maybe a week, maybe 'lil more. But it's best to wait until I finish edits.

Okay, next stop on the road is Only Sense Online volume 3, I don't know yet when, I don't know how, there's nothing I can promise as to when releases will start or if it will be released at all until the public raws appear on the internets. Only thing I can promise is - I'm going to start translating asap, even if it won't result in releases. In other words - nothing is certain, once releases start - it'll be the usual pace... probably.

Not a single ounce of presence of him/her in the blog lately, I'm becoming worried to Kadi-san.
And not worried 'bout the progress of the Nekama novel translation, it can come later. many can wait for it.

Back in college I was memorizing the syllabary and it took me like 3 months... Then I forgot it all. I'm so bad at memorization and that's like the only way to learn Kanji. There is a way to cheat though. Rikaichan can give you most of the translations for any typed kana or kanji. Then you just pick the right one.

    Reply
    1. krytyk Post author

Nope. If you believe that a machine can translate for you, you're disqualified.

Why? Because you don't know if what machine shows you is the right translation, or which translation out of all translations presented are right. Moreover, the kanji meanings change depending on the accompaniment of hiragana. To go further, translation can differ depending on the... depending blindly on a tool disqualifies anyone trying that because of their lack of dedication to pursue accuracy and obediently accepting the stuff that's spouted out.

      1. Coma

just try pasting the japanese version of any AA chapter in a machine and than make a comparison with krytyk works (that can be said for many other translator too but we have someone with a really good quality standard here so just let's make use of him :P ) ... I think that is the best way to get a little hold of the difference between MTL and actual translation...

even if you use parallel translation from different machines... add editing on top of that in order ot make it more fluent... the best you get is a text where you get the "meaning" of what is written... but you completely loose all the stylistic feature and often part of the character personality that is expressed trough peculiar way of speacking (that are rarely trasmitted trough MTL)... is just like going trough a detailed summary instead of the full text... you may get a comprensive understaning of the book but still you can't apreciate the book for what it really is...

or you want to make a different parallelism... is like having the same film realized by 2 different studios... they both use the same script but one use good actors, background and musics while the other take people off the streat chose random location and use some low level commerical music... the quality dosnìt only come from the "story" but also from "how it is told"

        Reply
        1. krytyk Post author

Well, even aside stylistic aspect, I know many, really many people who think they can or try translating with various machine translators from google to rikai and such, every one of them says the same thing - it's accurate because there's many sources blablabla. In the end, when I try reading through them there's a ridiculous amount of mistakes and it reads horrible.

It's like that every single time, no matter how 'competent' the person trying to translate with these tools is, and some of them seem extremely competent, they always end up writing something out of this world. That's enough for me to serve as a basis to recommend proper learning route.

          Reply
          1. Coma

To add a little to this... just today while roaming trough animetsuki (yeah.... I know how low the level of that forum can get but I still find some enjoiment in reading some silly discussion from time to time ^^) came out a discussion where a user was discussing a passage of a newly released chapter of a LN basing all his arguments on the MTL translation of that passage... just to be denied sometime later by someone that pointed out that the MTL gave the complete opposite meaning of the actual passage since the construction of the prase if correctly translated turned out to be the exact opposite (the sentence was something like "it will not hurt..." based on the MTL while the actual translation was "not only it will hurt..." )

end of the line... if you want to read japanese... either study it or have SOMEONE that know it translate it for you... MTL can help with short sentence and are usefull if used to convey/understand simple concept... they are not at the point where they can take the place of an actual translator ^^

      2. Phalkor

Well Of course I never said cheating is better. Even when you use translating tools you have to pick and choose what you think the right word is. It is basically just referencing a database for every symbol or group of symbols to help you read it. Also, I don't plan on translating anything myself but it is fun to play with. For memory impaired people like me learning Kanji is next to impossible anyways. I have like 0.01% chance of ever picking up a 2nd language. Having kanji entirely change its meaning based on circumstance is just too much to handle for me. Type at me with a straight face and say you've never looked in a dictionary. :P3

Learning Japanese is easier if you know some form of chinese, because 90% of the time the words have similar meanings and just sound different. You still have to memorize the Katakana and Hiragana though. But that's just like the alphabet.

I know quite a few people who say it's not exactly right, and knowledge of Chinese can cause you to make tons of mistakes instead.

Nein, Chinese and Japanese are very different. I can TL from Chinese (which I do). But not from Japan even though I have been in 'contact' with it for almost....20 years. Or maybe I'm just dumb at learning language.

          3. Kaiflame

Really? I'm finding it easier to learn Japanese than when I was learning Chinese. Might just be me though, and I'm still in the middle of learning it anyways.

Hey, Krytyk, I want to ask, do you think Antimagic or Black Bullet is darker? Not to start a flame war, just wanted to know your opinion, unless you don't read Black Bullet.

    Reply
    1. krytyk Post author

Honestly, I didn't read the entire black bullet. Skimmed through.

However, I have the rough idea.

Antimagic is dark, it has dark feels, tragic pasts. People die, but that's life. No major harm happens to main characters and it's rare to see side characters die, actually only 2 side characters died (1 is semi-alive and the other died in the same volume she appeared, moreover was an antagonist) in 5 volumes.

As for Black Bullet... its dark, but the darkness is a bit more artificial. People die, but it's more forced, author kills off characters of importance in order to make it feel 'dark'.

In other words, antimagic doesn't pull off shit that makes you worried if your favourite character is going to die on the next page and the 'dark' feeling comes from the atmosphere of the book, inquisition, witches, dark magic, disaster and apocalyptic world.

After the translation of Volume 3 of Only Sense Online, the next step is Volume 6 of Antimagic... Krytyk seems to intend to finish the volume currently worked on, then proceed to the next volume. It's meticulous and admirable work. So if OSO Volume 4 appears but Krytyk has already translated Prologue of Antimagic Volume 7, we'd have to wait till Volume 7 of Antimagic is complete, till we read the next work... I wonder what new series would be picked up after Antimagic and Only Sense Online is finished.
