Hey just a suggestion for when you update the site maybe placing an arrow on the bottom right so people can get back to the top instantly if you need a example look at http://royalroadl.com , this way readers can click the tabs for the translation they want to read next just something I think some readers might find helpful again this is just some thing for you to think on and not something all reader may want your choice.

Krytyk I pulled the hdmi cable from my computer to play ps4 so I am visiting your site from a new device... (my kindle) not remembering the exact website I searched google for only sense online, daybreak on Hyperion, krytyk and after breaking down and looking at my phone's bookmarks I searched directly for krytykal.org. Google refused to give me a link to your website. I thought you should know.

English doesn't seem like your native language based on your translations (they're very good but at some parts they sound wrong :P maybe they're just typos?), do you mind telling me which country you're from? Maybe how long you have studies Japanese too (I dunno, knowing that gives me a bit of a boost of inspiration I guess)? Not sure if this is too personal . . . sorry.

Shame you didn't keep doing 鮮血のエルフ. Really liked that. But the author dropped it himself so not much of a surprise I suppose.

Hello there, just for curiosity. For how long have you been studying/learning japanese?I looked at the posts here and i didint see this question appear.
Most of the posts here are "can you translate this if you dont mind".Although you were a little mean in the latest one before me but i understand that you wont take any suggestions and they are always showing up.
Sorry if my english is bad.

Hmm, it's not the case of "how long" but "how much". You can learn for a long time and still be far from being able to read anything, and you can go full intense and learn quickly. I took a month for basics before I got into translating, but in my case I spent a lot of time with intense flashcard learning and such (sometimes for half a day), after which I still had to read/translate with a dictionary in my hand.

So it's not "how long" but "until you reach bare acceptable minimum". It's not a time factor, but a factor of how many kanji you learn (not to mention kana) and how fast. Of course, you need to have basic know-how of the language too (basically, you should be used to hearing it, listen a lot to learn how Japanese speech "flows" otherwise you won't be able to recognize words because Japanese doesn't have spaces between characters).

Hello, first of all ty for translating all of this and now here are my questions.(may already appear some of them)
1st - When a LN gets licenced(other words take-down order) is there any way to read in ENG even after getting translated?Or continuing to translating when more LN are coming up?
2nd - In Baka-Tsuki or somewhere else if there is a series that is still "This series has not yet reached Full Project status requirements" can you lets say "take it over and translating"?
3rd - If the 2nd is "Right" can you try translating Seiken tsukai no World Break?Talk about past life, reincarnation, magic, knight an anime adptation came out in 2015 i think xd.

I think his first question was along the lines of "Once a title gets an English licensee, can you leave the existing translations up and/or continue to translate the title?"

The answer to the first part is contained in Krytyk's Disclaimer at the top of this page. The answer to the second part is basically "No" because the whole reason for for stopping and taking the title down is to avoid conflict with the licensee.

Thank you for your hard word. I read all your translations and the are very good.
What I want to ask is that I found a very interesting novel: Chuuko demo Koi ga Shitai. The genre is harem, romantic and school life. Only 4 volumes have been published but the plot is very interesting and promising. I wonder if you could find time in your schedule to translate this novel.

First I want to say thank you for all your hard work translating these novels.

I was wondering on how you started to learn japanese and or are then good ways to go about learning it I know it will be hard?

I'm also curious about is Ikaruga Suginami from antimagic academy is she bi sexual or does she like Takeru Kusanagi I'm sorry it's a stupid question I just really wanted to know the wiki for the show doesn't help?

    Reply
    1. krytyk Post author

Let's start with Ikaruga's question. I think you would learn that by reading the book itself, y'know. But yes.

As for Japanese, like anything else it requires time and dedication. That's all. It goes faster for some, slower for others. You start by drilling hiragana, katakana, then kanji. Basics of basics. That's 75% of learning Japanese.

First off let me say I'm a big fan of these translations and I'm so glad you take the time to do them.

My real question would be how do you decide what you want to translate? Do you pick from a list, a certain style, trope or genre, or some other method entirely?

Also, what's the longest volume you've ever had to translate?

    Reply
    1. krytyk Post author

How do I decide huh? I look around for stuff on the net, I check illustrations... if something looks like it might be interesting, I check the reviews on bookmeter or other Japanese sites... then I skim it to see what's it about...

Anyway, I pick what catches my attention.

Elvenblood volume 1 or Antimagic volume 5, one of those. would be the longest.

Simple but seriously time consuming. First, memorize Hiragana and Katakana. After that, study Kanji everyday and keep up memorizing them. When you learn 150+ or so kanji, the right ones, you can read Japanese. For translating, it'll take a really long time to do so. It's best to commit yourself properly first.

If you post the story on B-T's creative works forums and people like it, you can ask the admin (or get an offer) to host it on the site.
Alternatively, post it on one of the dedicated story sites like RoyalRoad.

          Reply
          1. Sonoda Yuki

As another alternative, you could use a wordpress (or whatever you prefer) blog and list your story on web fiction guide.

          2. krytyk Post author

It would lack publicity though. This blog has lots of entries so Aorii's novel is very exposed. But getting an audience and traffic by himself might be hard.

I'd say royalroad doesn't seem as attractive to many people. Unfortunately, it's impossible for me to host such a service.

          3. Aorii

Getting it hosted on B-T would get the publicity factor, especially if you can persuade the Fb/Twitter updater to post about chapter updates (which Daybreak gets ^^). The difficulty is getting it hosted there in the first place. My experience is that you'll need (1) good reviews from multiple individuals, including a staff member and (2) stay consistently active and updating for a while.
There is a lot of OLNs being posted in their creative works forum though, so spend that extra time polishing your synopsis and initial chapters if you want to stand out. As with most debuts, you only get one chance.

          4. Ivanokov

Great idea! Thank you! I'm going to start posting in the B-T forum... I wonder why I never thought of it

since scrolling down has to do with swiping up so if it's kinda slanted toward the right like /, it triggers the swipe to the right which is the menu trigger

I have to add; this is the first time I've been told that something I wrote was too long. This has been a very surreal experience.

Mm. Well if it passes over your head and it rubs you the wrong way, that's ultimately my fault. I'm starting to see why you're saying it sounds self-important. And I'm finding that the more I look at it that I might have partially intended that. No arguments about the commas. But ultimately, if it doesn't interest you then I failed. Strangely enough I'm satisfied with that, though.

I do agree with kadi, it is a bit forced, maybe crude and long. Making it more subtle would be nice.

I hope in the future, I can show you a casual excerpt. I will admit though, the narrator is still wordy. But the writing isn't drowning in metaphors, either.

Mm. Well, thank you. So it doesn't read very well. Given the character speaking, and the form of writing being used, it might be due to the use of language... I'll try and be more careful.

The unnecessary commas play a pretty big part in it. They kill a lot of the flow, annoyingly. For some phrases, I couldn't help but think "Chuuni, some?". And all in all, it might be a bit too long/slow, depending on what you're aiming for. But the last one might also be due to the other issues~~

    We shouldn’t have…
    And yet, we did.
Perhaps, in that very instance, over a thousand times before, we had met.
And though secretly we knew better, we instinctually became entangled.
Lusting for more than blood, we sought for the intent of our creation.
And somewhere deep inside, we knew that it would reside with one another.
And, so the earth had created a stage, just for two.
The moon, split the clouds, and the wind turned silent.
The beasts of the earth and fowl of the air, dared not interrupt, as if devout believers who lacked the capacity to doubt their lord.
And amidst it all, I only ever truly found your eyes there.
And in their ruby-like reflection, I found myself a sinner.
A criminal who served only to trespass and blemish this holy night.
A man who refused to know his place, his rights and his limits.
And a being who would, if allowed; could become the greatest evil this world would ever know.
Undoubtedly, I am the apple of your eye-----
Fruit wrought from a tree that should have never been desired.

On the first glance, it seems to be lacking good flow. However, it could possibly be some avant-garde poem beyond my artistic capabilities. I don't know where it came from, what it is, who written it, or what it was translated from... so not much I can tell aside from that the flow is a little poor.

I'm tempted to agree. Another impression is "stuck-up", frankly. It tries to be mysterious and whatnot, but it doesn't quite work. At least in part due to the flow issues. Or again, maybe it's poetry above our understanding.

In short, it's a waste of your time. But, I have an extremely small excerpt written here, and I was hoping that maybe by posting it in the comments, I could hear your thoughts regarding it. Kadi, if you or anyone else would like to comment on it, I'd appreciate it aswell.

I do not machine translate and I don't recommend machine translating. If anything I'm against machine translating.

I'm a novice translator here and about to do my first ever project about a Nekama protagonist in a vrmmorpg ( this is the name of the novel :俺のリアルとネトゲがラブコメに侵蝕され始めてヤバイ). I wonder if I can post my translation here in your website ? Jun justice is too much for me tho xD

Are you going to do the 'Translating 101' guide? I'm keen to learn the ropes and would appreciate advice and tips from an experienced translator. I have only rudimentary Japanese language skills (kana and sentence construction, connectors, jouyou kanji etc.) but would be fine with learning more if required. Hearsay people learn Japanese so much quicker if they have tasks like translations that push them to learn more so I would like to try it out. Thanks!

I would like to recommended a book to be translated, i was looking around the site and couldn't find the proper location to ask.

This story is about a person reincarnated into a simple slime, now he must learn how to adapt into his new body and environments.
    Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken

That sounds SUPER similar to the Re:Monster series. Where he reincarnates as a goblin rather than a slime.

I'm not certain as to why you chose to leave Baka Tsuki, but regardless, I now support you as I follow this site's progress. Although, you can just leave the links of your translated works there in Baka Tsuki, and those links would simply send us here to your site. I owe my gratitude towards Setsuna86blog for having a link that allowed me access to your site. I admire your efforts and your work. Translators like yourselves who dedicate themselves to translating Japanese and other light novels to English so they could be enjoyed by all otaku's everywhere are admirable. I'll definitely follow your site, and I'm looking forward to reading more of your translated work. Just don't work yourself too hard. And I'm certain those at Baka Tsuki and other translators and editors would help you if you need it. Best of luck!

I don't know if the site is still work-in-progress, but after reading two novels here there is one feature which I strongly miss: A link at the end of a chapter which will direct me to the next chapter xD.
Of course I could still scroll up and select the next chapter, but when I want to read the translation with my smartphone, this will become pretty tedious... .
Another thing: Will you put a download able pdf/epub/mobi/whatever-readable-for-ebooks version of your translation up? Or are we free to make our own pdf's/epubs/... of your translation? (Since you wrote in the disclaimer "[...] do not copy and reproduce the text elsewhere." it means no?)

There are PDF's mobis epub and whatever else on the series page. That's if they're already made.

As for links... thought about it but didn't find a good way to implement it yet.

ups, never saw it until you mentioned it ^^'

as for the links: in another post you told us it would break the fulltext page if you added these links, but isn't it possible to wrap these links in a div container and make them invisible through javascript for the fulltext page? Or don't you have full access to the code because of some circumstances? Or do I misunderstood the structure of the pages here ^^'?

    Just a question:

how do you edit the colour pages?

do you redraw them or use Photoshop or something like that?

"I couldn't care less about the amount of people entering, fans will find the novel anywhere", true that man. I panicked when Antimagic Academy and Elysion were deleted, boy was I relieved when you told in the Antimagic discussion in BT that you were just going independent, Thanks man

Actually, almost all blogs have feeds by default. That said, not all that many bloggers put up the feed as a link, but Blogger and WordPress blogs are fairly uniform as far as newsfeeds go.

Since the site is powered by wordpress, Krytykal's are:
        http://krytykal.org/feed
        with RSS as the default
        http://krytykal.org/feed/atom
        and atom being the alternate.

as an aside, blogger's default is ../feeds/posts/default
        with atom as the default
        alternates are ../feeds/posts/default/?alt=rss
        and ../feeds/posts/default/?alt=json

even this web page i got from BT (lucky me it didnt got deleted along with the novel page ^^)
my only concern is how would another fans out there find this place
because mangaupdates cant put translator pages on their website now
and when i tried googling i could find the page....

Thats all and thanks for your translation

Mangaupdates still links to translator's twitter page. And on my twitter page I put down link to this blog. The best way is to track the twitter I guess... you can also watch the animesuki forums topic, they always become lively when releases are out.
