First comment on Russian language and so low quality. What a shame. (Don't think that you first Russian here). Novel is good enough (but not good as Aorii's Daybreak thought) for trigger certain tags.

To any new reader, just a heads up: This story is heavily gamified. It's like the game-world he's in came from the 90s.
In short, it's the sort of story in which the MC learns how to cast magic, simply because he "leveled up", and then chooses a magic system from a menu.
He doesn't get to "understand magic" or "sense magic". Nope. Just level up, and poof -- you can now cast magic.

Don't expect any form of creativity from the setting, the only reason to read this is for the gender-bender plot, and the character interactions. Those two are very amusing, but the whole combat thing? Absolutely not.

Alrighty people, I would like to know from ANYONE, Kadi in particular, if they intend on continuing the translations for this. I really like this series but 5 months is quite a long time to wait for a new chapter. I did tentatively email Kadi but received no response. I totally understand about real life however, I also think it important to convey some kind of status as to what is happening, like what happened with Smartphone and Din no Monsho.

... Why does the picture depict Alice with blue hair when she was supposed to have silver hair? Odd.

    Reply
    1. Cairen

Blue and silver are practically the same think from an anime standpoint. Straight Grey looks boring from some people's depictions, a tint of yellow instantly makes people think blond. I have seen look up "No Game, No Life" and you will see "Silver" hair that is depicted with hints of purple, and even sometimes VERY blue.

Machine translation will never be perfect in any way. It's not human, that's why.

          2. Sanngrior

Indeed, a machine can't perfectly translate the intended meaning of a piece of text. Especially when the author botch parts of it or chooses unorthodox choices.

      1. Jammerg55

I'm actively translating Smartphone with a different group right now but I would be happy to pick up the translations for this for the time being. I've read quite a bit ahead and would like to help out.

I'm just picking on the word usage. I just find it funny how people call "webnovels" arcs "volumes" where as a "volume" refers exclusively to printed media.

well, theres always the other gender bender ones on this site, such as "daybreak on hyperion" and "Only sense online". There is another called "royalroad" that people use to publish their novels, some of the gender bender ones i have come across are "The Sword Princess's Tale" "Eulalia's Adventure" and "A Lasting Fury" there are probably more there, but those are the only ones i have come across/remember. There is also a novel that i am currently writing which is also published on that site called "The splintered luck", i can guarantee the quality of it, but i did take SOME inspiration from things like "Alice tale". Other than that, i have no clue, hope this helps.

https://henoujikun.wordpress.com/what-came-to-mind-during-my-third-time-in-another-world-was-to-for-now-get-naked-chapters/ - I find this pretty good. The protagonist is sent to a fantasy world with RPG mechanics. He becomes the hero, slays the demon king, picks up a drop and restarts the adventure from the beginning with his newly acquired stats. The second time he slays the demon king again, then he slays the true demon king, picks up the same drop and his adventure is restarted again with the stats he had at the end. Only this time he has the body of a little girl.

Also, this is just about all the gender-bender novels out there:

So I've been following a novel for fugging DAYS and the author releases only like one chapter every week(2 chapters currently out) and I learned today that apparently, there is another genderbender work with a heroine of the same name. And that is this, Alice Tale. I also noticed that you guys want to read something similar. Now, I don't know if the one I'm reading, "Alice" is inspired by "Alice Tale," but the former is not as fluffy as the latter. Idk if it's dark or fluffy but it's pretty good so far.

If you guys wanna see, first and second chapters are here. Author is Mimulus

Other works like this one... unfortunately, I haven't found (m?)any so far. Well, there is OSO, but that one's focus is different. Still good, but different. Less fluffy, most of all. Of course, male-female reincarnation/VR gender swap stories and the like do exist, but they're generally not up to par. Much earlier in the comments, someone posted links to two stories, and one of them, "Majo no Yakata"/"The Witch's Mansion"(?) made me feel stupid for reading it. Starts out badly written (Tell, don't show-style), is then useable to kill time for a while before it just goes to hell. Also, it's full of wish-fulfillment up the butt.

I might go looking for good male-female reincarnation stories in the future, but for now I think I'll prioritize trying to get another chapter out... After lunch.

Well... I've been translating this (for myself to read) up to the "Shopping" chapter (I won't spoil anything other than the chapter title).
Since I'm pretty much a noob in Japanese, so I've been translating using a furigana app + japanese - english dictionary (that I miraculously find in my closet).
So my translation is... well... need a lot of editing (since english isn't my primary language either, its 3rd) but at least I can understand what I translate.

So... yeah, that's how I keep my sanity while waiting for a proper update :v

Using a furigana app disqualifies you from calling yourself a translator, I"m sorry but phonetic translating is not translating at all, Japanese isn't a language you can translate from furigana and phonetics. You should put an effort into learning kanji :).

I learned them myself from asahi's kanji flashcards. But you need to have some tenacity to repeat the same thing again and again.

There are also other flashcards you can use like Japanese-lesson and such.

This is really interesting!! It's kinda weird how he's a girl though, can i consider this genderbender?
At first i thought she'd have a romantic relationship with that new guy who has a grudge against Elfs but if that'd happen I'd quit reading lol.
Anyways, doesn't seem like that's going to happen because the author contantly reminding us that he's a guy in the inside. Haha i hope he turns to a guy soon and maybe ends up with that "Onee chan" girl.
I really love these past few chapters, pretty emotional and i didn't think she'd be badass at times.Like with the Pirate.

          2. Sonoda Yuki

I'd say almost certainly not. At least not unless it were temporary.

          3. krytyk Post author

I'd go further and say - absolutely not.

The main distinguishing feature of the webnovel is the genderbent main character.

    2. grim-san

I never understood people like you and willis. it honestly makes me wonder if we're reading the same thing.
The MC is never turning back into a guy, its a genderbend, its the whole main point.
Sure he keeps reminding the audience tht alice is a guy, but thts just cuz Alice is in denial of the fact that hes becoming more feminine.
And lastly, this is clearly a yuri/shoujo-ai, so Alice is going to end up with another girl, currently prolly her slave/friend, though i thght her onee-sama would have the courage to step up.

There are people are of the ardent opinion that people at large should not be subjected to the written works that suffered at the hand of "translators" who lacked sufficient competence in basic reading comprehension and writing composition. At least, not under the guise of a translation. Those people gather here.

          5. Shano

Well, I guess there is nothing for you at this. I want do it for my sake, for the readers, and for the novel itself. Looking back, me translating hardly bring anything to you. Working with another translator may even mess up your pace.
Even so, this is such a refreshing novel that I enjoyed a lot. Seeing it untouched for months is really sad.

          6. Aorii

I think Kadi is more concerned about your TL experience / knowledge of JP>ENG (maybe?)
The people here are somewhat on the 'qualitative purist' side =P

          7. krytyk Post author

It's more like Kadi wants to make sure it's done in quality by doing it by himself, speed is a minor issue.

People offering help with webnovels and translating webnovels are bound to be distrusted as well, the ones doing webnovels are usually those who can't speak Japanese at all and use the machine translators due to easy access to text version of the novel.

          8. Josh Thomson

i didnt mean it to be mean just no updates for awhile and thought something was the matter and was wondering if your ok i dont check anything else on krytykal other than this so i didnt know if you did something else

          9. Kadi

It's fine, Josh, I wasn't actually offended. No, I didn't do anything else productive. Just had some serial cases of RL getting in the way when I should've had a bunch of time off.

          10. Crazyh

So summary= Kadi has been prioritising RL over the life/death matter of TLing this :P

          11. victor rama

See. It had nothing with me doing anything to Kadi or whatever you people are accusing me of.
And just like what Aorii and Kadi said, quality over quantity!

    1. Vivec

I hope it is, but translators do what they want, and as leechers we don't really have any right to a say in what they want to do. At least there's plenty of other good stories out there including others being translated on this website.

I had posted about that one story on syosetsu last month, and I have another good one in the vein of Alice Tale people may want to check out. Not sure if it's completed or not, however.
    Called: Sis-Change!
    http://ncode.syosetu.com/n8588bu/

Summary for the hook: The main characters, Itsuki (16) and his little sister Matsuri (10) play a VRMMO like SAO/ALO (non-death style). Matsuri heard there was currently a bypass for the authentication checks in the game that allowed blood relatives to swap characters during login, so she begs Itsuki to do it once with her. Embarrassed, Itsuki tries to avoid running across anyone they know in-game, as they wouldn't be able to pose as each other. But in the end they run across Matsuri's friends from school she normally parties with, and they decide to run the Minotaur's Labyrinth dungeon together.

While making their way to the gate out of the dungeon after clearing it, the gate is a different color than normal— maybe its one of the new rare spawn content zones from the new expansion that just went live? Upon activating the gate however, everything goes horribly wrong— they start to get a horrible headache and pressure in their heads ... something that shouldn't be possible with the very low sensory levels allowed in the game! Yelling for everyone to emergency log out, Itsuki blacks out before he can finish navigating the menu...

Itsuki awakens to find himself back in the Minotaur boss room. Except something is strange ... it feels strangely cold, and he can smell a damp mustiness... none of them being sensations you could feel in the game. He notices Matsuri still passed out in the corner, but nobody else of their party around. Itsuki tries to activate his menus, but finds that none of them work... the only inventory they have is the satchel Matsuri was wearing with consumables. Suddenly he hears a roar from behind and finds that the Minotaur boss had respawned for some reason. Making a surprise attack, Itsuki is unable to dodge and attempts to block, but is thrown across the room and falls to the ground coughing up blood!

Something was VERY wrong here. Everything felt too real. And with no menus as well, it's almost as if...

// It's a very interesting take on a rather cliche story trend. I figured it would be very generic, but was pleasantly surprised while reading it. And here is a link where the author has character art for Itsuki— who is now a loli dark elf with a giant fucking scythe :)

I have the ability, but not the time. It's one thing to breeze along at a decent pace and read it on your own, but takes far longer to translate. Especially for me, because I'm a rather stickler for accuracy and wording. Like I worked on Ore Twintail ni Narimasu for a while, and it just took far too long with my script-writing style. I already translate like 3 manga series atm with some things on the side too.

I have the feeling you were possibly lead here by a certain Holy Sheeprabbit's page?

I've just read this series(I finished reading this for almost two hours) and I feel like I'm addicted to this series. So I just want to ask how many times do you update this novel? Once a week? Once a month? Or depends to your mood??

Btw I've found a really excellent shorter series on Syosetsu fellow moonreaders should check out:
    http://ncode.syosetu.com/n5308cj/
"The Family With Tearful Faces" roughly.
The setup is the MC has died and wakes up without any memories but his name and that he died in an accident. An angel controls a stuffed animal to explain things to him. The catch of course, is the MC (Yuuki) woke up as another Yuuki (different kanji) ... a girl. And her body seems to have a subconscious trauma reaction to being around a lot of people or being touched at all. So while the angel told him he only gets a week to research the events surrounding his death, the MC is left intrigued by what could have caused this girl's trauma and gets wrapped up in trying to find out what happened to her and help her heal her trauma.

A very different direction than nearly any other TG story of this type I've seen before.

indeed, but it sounds like an interesting concept. i might even be able to make use of the idea for my own story.

is he just the 1 girl and the story focuses on that 1 girls trauma? sounds like "if he was cycled between male and female bodies figuring out their trauma's until he manages to remember his own circumstances, then he gets to ascend or have another shot at life" would make for an interesting longer series version/continuation of it.

One guy, ending up in the body of one girl and neither his nor her memories, no body-changing. Using the week he has, he tries to fix her issues and finds out about her circumstances in the process. That setting is kind of a classic, but the execution is excellent. His own circumstances are much less of a concern for the moment but I'm sure that'll change at some point and all will be (and have to be) clear by the end of the week, no room for a continuation. For now we mostly know about him that it's been at least a few months since his death.

Well, I'll just close in saying, to clarify, a slow translator is generally the sign of someone inexperienced to begin with, who is likely to make those basic mistakes no matter how much time they have.

Well, there's no such thing as "until my skills get better".

I'd say, continue slowly. Trudge through the walls of Japanese text with dictionary in hand and dedication in mind.

A translator can be only fast or slow, he cannot be incorrect. In other words, just continue as you are while making sure everything is accurately translated. Speed is a minor issue and will come by itself.

Well, I know that its kinda impossible for me to be a proper translator(cause i'm way too lazy). At most i can probably just be a reader that happens to share what he has read. since i'm more of a reader than a TL'er but still I'll try to.

C'mon krytyk, that's just silly -- of course a translator can still be incorrect, no matter the speed ;x
Many words have somewhat different meanings depending on context, colloquial phrases are easy to mess up -- you would have a statement that was literally correct, but not accurate at all. (IE: uwasa wo sureba -- literally 'if you speak of rumors' -- the closest English phrase is 'speak of the devil') And inexperienced translators have really stiff and awkward scripts that end up losing a lot of the ambiance of the scene.

You know nothing, John Snow. The mistakes those people do are not at that level. They're failing the very basics, I'll bring up the very basic example by Kazeboy:

            俺の肩のあたりを熱っぽい視線でさすっている

Kazeboy's translation: "she's attached to my shoulder while looking feverish."

Proper translation: "I've felt her hot gaze on my shoulder"

And so go on entire chapters of said person's translation, moreover, I've seen worse - COTHER for example, that guy was epic... And it's not only those two, I've checked translations of many people, 90% of them were similarly incompetent, absolutely zero proper knowledge nor research effort, tons of GUESSING the meaning, yes, guessing thus guesslation. I mean, "mtl" "romaji translation" "hiragana" translation. Is that supposed to be a joke? If so, then not a funny one.

Meh, I shouldn't bring this discussion back to blog...

The word is "boring", since it does nothing with his being badass. Then there's the fact that the author's writing style is horrible. So was the pacing, I think. And the characters' depth of personality.
